Abstract
Legumes are central to global food and nutritional security,
sustainable cropping systems, and the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, yet
diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes persistently
constrain their productivity. Climate change is now reshaping these pressures
by accelerating pathogen life cycles, expanding pathogen ranges and weakening
host defences. This review provides a consolidated account of (i) the economic
and nutritional importance of legumes and the scale of disease-related losses
(ii) the influence of a changing climate on pest and pathogen dynamics (iii)
the biology, epidemiology and impact of the major fungal diseases (Botrytis,
Ascochyta, Fusarium, Sclerotium rolfsii, rusts, root rots
and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum), the re-emerging bacterial wilt of dry
beans and the major viral diseases (iv) pathogen virulence factors and plant
defence signaling and (v) the full spectrum of management options, from cultural
practices, host resistance and genomics-assisted breeding to biological
control, botanicals, essential oils, organic amendments, fungicides,
nanotechnology and digital agriculture. It indicates that no single tactic is
sufficient, and durable disease control depends on integrating clean seed,
rotation and sanitation, resistant cultivars, biocontrol agents, botanicals and
judicious fungicide use, supported by stronger seed systems, surveillance and
inclusive policy.
